1980年代，新世代作家率先解嚴，開啟了台灣意識論戰。起因是統派作家陳映真寫了篇文章，陳述對於祖國中國的嚮往，引爆統獨論戰，對於戰後世代而言，這番言論顯然不合時宜，以黨國體制為主的年代已然過去，多數人奮力追求民主，族群、性別運動盛行，作家也進行多元視角的書寫，除了底層小人物之外，也書寫女性、同性戀、原住民的處境。
